This article will explore some of the cool collaboration tools available for Microsoft Windows operating system.
Windows operating system comes with Remote Desktop tool called "Remote Desktop Connection". It is a good tool for working remotely. But the problem with this tool is that it allows only one connection at a time. If somebody logs on remotely the local user gets disconnected and vice versa.
UltraVNC (http://www.uvnc.com/) is an alternative for Windows Remote Desktop. UltraVNC is simple yet powerful open source tool. With this tool multiple users can connect to the same desktop. In addition to the Remote Desktop capability it includes messaging and file transfer functionality. UltraVNC has two components namely server and viewer. UltraVNC server needs to be started on the machine whose desktop is to be shared among the user. The remote users connect to the UltraVNC server using UltraVNC viewer.
To configure UltraVNC server just enter a proper VNC password for user authentication. That is the only thing needed to set and keep everything else to default settings. This password will be used by all UltraVNC viewer to authenticate with server.
Now invoke UltraVNC viewer giving the IP address of remote machine whose desktop is to be acquired.
That is it all required to log on to remote machine. Multiples UltraVNC viewer can connect to the same UltraVNC server making it a great tool for collaborative activities.
The other collaborative tool is called IP Messanger (http://www.ipmsg.org/index.html.en).
It is a simple, light weight and multi-platform tool for message exchange and file transfer between machines.
To send a file just drag and drop it on the above screen and send. The file can be sent to multiple users by selecting from User column.
This is a great tool for file exchange without going to hassles of Windows File Sharing. Currently this tool supports Windows, Unix and Macintosh.
