Internet is undoubtedly one of the greatest inventions of century. What started as defense project now is an integral part of everybody’s life. Today we cannot imagine life without internet. Most of the services are getting replaced by internet. Mailings, Television, Radio, and Telephony are few of them and the list is increasing day by day.
Internet has started one of the major communication revolution. To be more precise, it has enabled consolidation of services that are dependent on some kind of network.
Let’s take an example of telephone service. Telephone is basically a voice communication medium based on switching network. And it is the oldest form of communication network available to date. In current scenario, telephony is possible by using internet using something called as Voice Over IP (VOIP), making existence of traditional network redundant. In near future all the telephone networks will be replaced by single internet enabled telephone service.
The other good example is television. Traditionally television broadcasting used to happen through some terrestrial network like satellite communication. In today’s world, we are seeing emergence of IP based television services. Television content is delivered through internet right at your PC thus making terrestrial network redundant. That precisely what a network consolidation!
There are many other examples that indicate the phenomenon of network consolidation. The point to drive home is we are experiencing all the services getting hosted via internet!
Today personal computers are the major contribution to internet infrastructures. Computers owned by individual and enterprises forms the backbone of today’s internet. These scenarios will also going to change in future as we will see integration of non-desktop and non-server categories of computer.
For example, computer enabled refrigerators and air condition units will be part of internet infrastructure. All these computer enable devices will be internet ready in near future so that we can manage them from anywhere. Or they will be intelligent enough to gather information off the internet and do a self management.
Similar ways internet will be used for communicating with other devices that are part of our life. The ever increasing bandwidth, robust infrastructure and cost effectiveness are the key features of internet, which is enabling communication revolutions!
